“BAPTISM FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS”

ACTS 2:37-38

INTRODUCTION

MY MESSAGE THIS MORNING IS ONE DESIGNED TO TEACH ABOUT BAPTISM.  AS FAR AS I KNOW, ALL SO-CALLED CHRISTIAN CHURCHES TEACH AND PRACTICE SOME FORM OF BAPTISM.  A GREAT NUMBER OF THEM TEACH THAT BAPTISM IS REQUIRED IN ORDER TO BE SAVED.  THOSE WHO DO THAT, USE OUR TEXT THIS MORNING TO “PROVE” THEIR POSITION.  HOWEVER, AS I INTEND TO SHOW IN THIS MESSAGE THIS MORNING, THAT VERSE DOES NOT TEACH THAT BAPTISM IS REQUIRED FOR SALVATION.  IF ANY PRESENT BELIEVE THAT IT DOES, I ASK THAT YOU LISTEN AND CONSIDER WHAT THE BIBLE HAS TO SAY ABOUT THIS. IT IS NOT  MY INTENT TO ANGER OR UPSET ANYONE WITH THIS MESSAGE.  MY INTENT IS TO SHOW WHY OUR CHURCH TEACHES AND PREACHES SALVATION BY GRACE, WITHOUT WORKS OF ANY KIND, INCLUDING BAPTISM.  WE PREACH AND TEACH IT BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT GOD TEACHES THROUGH HIS WORD.  SOME IN THE RELIGIOUS COMMUNITY DECLARE THAT BAPTISM IS REQUIRED IN ORDER FOR SALVATION TO BE ACCOMPLISHED. THOSE WHO DO THIS RELY HEAVILY UPON THIS TEXT VERSE (ACTS 2:38).  AS A MATTER OF FACT, THEIR ENTIRE CASE (IN THIS VERSE) RESTS UPON A VERY SMALL PREPOSITION, “FOR”.  ALTHOUGH A SUPERFICIAL READING MAY GIVE THE IMPRESSION THAT WE ARE BAPTIZED “IN ORDER TO BE SAVED”, ANY  SERIOUS STUDY WILL REVEAL THIS IS NOT THE TEACHING HERE.  LET’S EXAMINE THE PREPOSITION “FOR”, AS FOUND HERE FOR A FEW MINUTES AND SEE WHAT IS ACTUALLY STATED.  A BASIC QUESTION THAT HAS ALWAYS STRUCK ME ABOUT THE TEACHING THAT BAPTISM IS REQUIRED FOR SALVATION, IS IF IT IS REQUIRED FOR SALVATION, WHOSE BAPTISM?  METHODIST, CHURCH OF CHRIST, BAPTIST, PRESBYTERIAN, LUTHERAN?  WHOSE? MOST OF THEM TEACH THAT ONLY THEIR BAPTISM IS CORRECT, SO THAT IF YOU DON’T HAVE THEIR BAPTISM, THEN YOU DON’T HAVE BAPTISM, WHICH IS REQUIRED FOR SALVATION.  THAT’S A DANGEROUS POSITION.

I. FIRST, CONSIDER THE GREEK WORD “EIS”, RENDERED “FOR” IN THIS VERSE. THE ACTUAL GREEK DEFINITION FOR “EIS” IS “UNTO, INTO, TOWARD”.  DR. A.T. ROBERTSON STATES, “WHEN THE WORD SHOWS RELATIONSHIP, IT SHOULD ALWAYS BE RENDERED, “WITH REFERENCE TO.” IT DOES EXACTLY THAT HERE IN THIS VERSE.

A. CONSIDER SOME EXAMPLES OF THE USE OF THE WORD “EIS”.  I COR. 10:2, “AND WERE ALL BAPTIZED UNTO (EIS - WITH REFERENCE TO) MOSES IN THE CLOUD AND IN THE SEA; ACTS 19:3, “AND HE (PAUL) SAID UNTO THEM, UNTO (EIS - WITH REFERENCE TO) WHAT THEN WERE YE BAPTIZED? AND THEY SAID, UNTO (EIS - WITH REFERENCE TO) JOHN’S BAPTISM.”  THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL AND THE DISCIPLES OF ACTS 19:3, WERE BAPTIZED WITH REFERENCE TO MOSES AND JOHN’S BAPTISM, NOT IN ORDER TO BECOME MOSES OR JOHN’S BAPTISM. ALSO, ROM. 6:3, STATES, “KNOW YE NOT, THAT SO MANY OF US AS WERE BAPTIZED INTO (EIS - WITH REFERENCE TO) JESUS CHRIST WERE BAPTIZED INTO (EIS - WITH REFERENCE TO) HIS DEATH?” THOSE BAPTIZED WERE BAPTIZED WITH REFERENCE TO JESUS CHRIST, AND IN REFERENCE TO HIS DEATH (BURIAL & RESURRECTION).

II. NEXT, CONSIDER SOME OTHER THINGS TO BE NOTED ABOUT THIS SMALL GREEK WORD “EIS”.

A. CONSIDER THE ADDRESS USED TOWARD THE ONES IN OUR TEXT, “MEN AND BRETHREN” (VS. 37).  IT SHOWS THAT A RELATIONSHIP ALREADY EXISTED BEFORE BAPTISM.  THE UNSAVED ARE NEVER REFERRED TO AS “MEN AND BRETHREN”.

B. CONSIDER THE QUESTION ASKED, “WHAT MUST WE DO?”  NOT “TO BE SAVED.”  THOSE WHO BELIEVE THAT BAPTISM IS REQUIRED FOR SALVATION, ALMOST ALWAYS READ THIS AS “WHAT MUST WE DO TO BE SAVED?”  BUT THE QUESTION IS ONLY “WHAT MUST WE DO?” THEY HAD ALREADY BEEN SAVED, SO THEY ARE ASKING WHAT ARE THEY TO DO NEXT.  THEY WERE TOLD TO REPENT AND BE BAPTIZED “FOR” (EIS) WITH REFERENCE TO THE REMISSION OF THEIR SINS.

C. CONSIDER THE RESPONSE, “BE BAPTIZED”, AND THE RESULTS, “AND YE SHALL RECEIVE THE GIFT OF THE HOLY GHOST.” THEY WOULD RECEIVE “THE GIFT”, NOT “THE HOLY GHOST HIMSELF.”  BAPTISM BROUGHT THE SPIRITUAL GIFTS TO THE ONES WHO WERE BAPTIZED.  THEY RECEIVED THE HOLY SPIRIT UPON THEIR SALVATION, BEFORE THEY WERE BAPTIZED.

III. THE ENGLISH WORD “FOR” DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN “IN ORDER TO OBTAIN”, AS SHOWN IN THE FOLLOWING EXAMPLES:

A. “I PAY FOR A HOUSE” (PAY TO OBTAIN).

B. A CANDIDATES RUNS FOR AN OFFICE. (IN ORDER TO OBTAIN).

C. WE ATTEND A CLASS FOR A GRADE (ATTEND TO OBTAIN.)

BUT....

D. “FOR” OFTEN MEANS “BECAUSE OF AN ACT OR ACTION”, AS IN THE FOLLOWING:

ONE GOES TO JAIL “FOR” ROBBERY. (NOT IN ORDER TO COMMIT A ROBBERY, BUT BECAUSE THEY HAVE ALREADY COMMITTED A ROBBERY.)

HE WAS REWARDED FOR HIS HONESTY.  (NOT IN ORDER FOR HIM TO BECOME HONEST, BUT BECAUSE HE IS ALREADY HONEST.)

HE WAS REPRIMANDED FOR NEGLIGENCE. (NOT IN ORDER TO BECOME NEGLIGENT, BUT BECAUSE HE ALREADY WAS NEGLIGENT).

IN THIS VERSE, THEN IT IS EASY TO SEE THAT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BAPTISM AND SINS, SO, AS DR. ROBERTSON STATED, “WHEN IT SHOWS A RELATIONSHIP, IT SHOULD ALWAYS BE TRANSLATED ‘WITH REFERENCE TO’. THEY WERE TO BE BAPTIZED FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS (NOT IN ORDER TO HAVE THEM REMITTED, BUT BECAUSE THEY ALREADY HAD BEEN.)

IV. CONSIDER “WHY” FOR HERE CANNOT MEAN “BAPTIZED IN ORDER TO BE SAVED.”  REMEMBER THAT THERE IS NO CONTRADICTION IN THE WORD OF GOD.  WHAT IT SAYS IN ONE PLACE ABOUT A TEACHING MUST CONFORM AND COMPLY WITH WHAT IS STATED IN ANOTHER PLACE ABOUT THAT TEACHING.

A. IN RESPONSE TO A DIRECT QUESTION BY THE PHILLIPIAN JAILOR, “WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?” (ACTS 16:30, PAUL AND SILAS DID NOT GIVE BAPTISM AS A REQUIREMENT FOR SALVATION, , “(THE JAILOR) BROUGHT THEM OUT, AND SAID, SIRS, WHAT MUST I DO TO BE SAVED?” PAUL & SILAS TOLD HIM IN VERSE 31, “AND THEY SAID, BELIEVE ON THE LORD JESUS CHRIST, AND THOU SHALT BE SAVED, AND THY HOUSE.”  DO YOU THINK PAUL AND SILAS WOULD HAVE LEFT OUT THE BAPTISM PART, IF IT WAS REQUIRED?

B. CONSIDER THE THIEF ON THE CROSS.  HE WASN’T BAPTIZED.  THERE WAS NO WAY HE COULD HAVE BEEN.  HE WAS NAILED TO A CROSS UNTIL HIS DEATH. YET, IT IS DECLARED CLEARLY THAT HE WAS SAVED. JESUS HIMSELF DECLARED IT IN LUKE 23:42-43, “AND HE SAID UNTO JESUS, LORD, REMEMBER ME WHEN THOU COMEST INTO THY KINGDOM.  AND JESUS SAID UNTO HIM, VERILY I SAY UNTO THEE, TO DAY SHALT THOU BE WITH ME IN PARADISE.”  MANY FALSE TEACHINGS ARE GIVEN TO COVER THIS GREAT FLAW IN THE “BAPTISM REQUIREMENT FOR SALVATION” IDEA.  ONE FLAWED IDEA IS THAT THIS STATEMENT TO THE THIEF WAS MADE BEFORE JESUS DIED, SO IT WAS “UNDER THE LAW”. THEY SAY THAT AFTER HIS DEATH, BAPTISM BECAME A REQUIREMENT.  HOWEVER, THEY ALSO GO BACK, LONG BEFORE THE CROSS, TO JESUS’S DEALING WITH NICODEMUS IN JOHN 3:5, WHERE JESUS SAID A MAN MUST BE BORN OF WATER AND OF THE SPIRIT.  THERE, THEY MAKE THE “WATER” MEAN “BAPTISM,” WHICH IT DOESN’T, IT REFERS TO THE WATER OF OUR HUMAN BIRTH.  WE ARE PHYSICALLY BORN AND THEN WE MUST BE SPIRITUALLY BORN IN SALVATION. JESUS IS SPEAKING OF THE TWO BIRTHS.  THAT IS SEEN IN THE FACT THAT “BORN OF WATER” IS GIVEN FIRST.  WERE IT TO REFER TO BAPTISM, “BORN OF WATER” WOULD BE LISTED AFTER “BORN OF THE SPIRIT”. EVEN THOSE WHO TEACH THAT BAPTISM IS REQUIRED FOR SALVATION, DO NOT PUT BAPTISM AS TAKING PLACE BEFORE BELIEF AND FAITH TAKES PLACE IN SALVATION.

C. CONSIDER THAT CONDEMNATION IS FOR “NON BELIEF”, NOT FOR “NOT BEING BAPTIZED”, AS JESUS STATED IN  MARK 16:16, STATES, “HE THAT BELIEVETH AND IS BAPTIZED SHALL BE SAVED; BUT HE THAT BELIEVETH NOT SHALL BE DAMNED.” WHAT IS STATED IS THAT WHEN WE BELIEVE AND ARE BAPTIZED, WE SHALL BE SAVED, BUT IT DOES NOT SAY “BELIEVETH NOT AND IS NOT BAPTIZED SHALL BE DAMNED.” THIS IS WHAT SOME MENTALLY ADD.  ALSO, LISTEN TO WHAT JESUS STATED ABOUT CONDEMNATION IN JOHN 3:18, “HE THAT BELIEVETH ON HIM IS NOT CONDEMNED: BUT HE THAT BELIEVETH NOT IS CONDEMNED ALREADY, BECAUSE HE HATH NOT BELIEVED IN THE NAME OF THE ONLY BEGOTTEN SON OF GOD.”  JESUS DOESN’T EVEN MENTION BAPTISM IN THIS VERSE. SALVATION RESTS UPON BELIEF AND FAITH, NOT UPON BAPTISM.

D,. CONSIDER THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT WAS RECEIVED BEFORE BAPTISM IN ACTS 10:47, AS STATED BY THE APOSTLE PAUL, “CAN ANY MAN FORBID WATER, THAT THESE SHOULD NOT BE BAPTIZED, WHICH HAVE RECEIVED THE HOLY GHOST AS WELL AS WE?”  UNSAVED PEOPLE NEVER RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT BEFORE SALVATION.  SALVATION MUST HAVE OCCURRED BEFORE THEY RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT.  ALSO, SEE ACTS 9:18, WHERE THE SCALES FELL FROM THE EYES OF SAUL BEFORE HE WAS BAPTIZED. “AND IMMEDIATELY THERE FELL FROM HIS EYES AS IT HAD BEEN SCALES: AND HE RECEIVED SIGHT FORTHWITH, AND AROSE, AND WAS BAPTIZED.”  A MAJOR PROBLEM WITH FALSE TEACHING IS THAT THERE ARE TOO MANY SCRIPTURES THAT HAVE TO BE EXPLAINED AWAY, AND THEN THEY MISS GETTING THEM ALL.

E. ALSO, CONSIDER THAT JESUS WAS BAPTIZED, YET HE WAS NEVER LOST.  PETER MAKES THAT CLEAR IN I PETER 1:18-19, “FORASMUCH AS YE KNOW THAT YE WERE NOT REDEEMED WITH CORRUPTIBLE THINGS, AS SILVER AND GOLD, FROM YOUR VAIN CONVERSATION RECEIVED BY TRADITION FROM YOUR FATHERS;

BUT WITH THE PRECIOUS BLOOD OF CHRIST, AS OF A LAMB WITHOUT BLEMISH AND WITHOUT SPOT:” JESUS WAS BAPTIZED AS A PATTERN FOR US, BUT HIS BAPTISM IDENTIFIED HIM WITH THE FATHER, AS DOES OURS.  IN MATT. 3:15, HE TOLD JOHN THE BAPTIST, WHO BAPTIZED HIM, “IT BECOMETH US TO FULFILL ALL RIGHTEOUSNESS.”

F. LAST, CONSIDER THAT THE BIBLE CLEARLY TELLS US THE PURPOSE OF BAPTISM IN I PETER 3:21, WHERE IT STATES, “THE LIKE FIGURE WHEREUNTO EVEN BAPTISM DOTH ALSO NOW SAVE US (NOT THE PUTTING AWAY OF THE FILTH OF THE FLESH, BUT THE ANSWER OF A GOOD CONSCIENCE TOWARD GOD,) BY THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST:” ALTHOUGH USED BY THOSE WHO STATE THIS VERSE TEACHES WE ARE SAVED BY BAPTISM, LOOK WHAT IT ACTUALLY SAYS, “...BAPTISM DOTH ALSO NOW SAVE US, NOT THE PUTTING AWAY OF THE FILTH OF THE FLESH (SIN NATURE), BUT THE ANSWER OF A GOOD CONSCIENCE TOWARD GOD. ALSO NOTE THAT IT TELLS HOW WE ARE ACTUALLY SAVED, “BY THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST.”  BAPTISM GIVES US A CLEAR CONSCIENCE BEFORE GOD, BY OUR COMPLYING WITH WHAT WE ARE COMMANDED TO DO AFTER WE ARE SAVED, THAT IS TO BE BAPTIZED.

V. SUMMARY:

A. AS WE COME TO THIS TIME OF THE BAPTISM OF THESE THREE, LET IT BE KNOWN BY ALL PRESENT, THAT THIS WILL NOT ACCOMPLISH SALVATION FOR THEM. IF THEY ARE SAVED, THEY ARE SAVED RIGHT NOW, BEFORE THEY GO INTO THE WATERS OF BAPTISM.

B. BAPTISM IS IMPORTANT IN THE PLAN OF SALVATION, AS IT SHOWS AND DECLARES TO ALL THE WORLD, WHAT HAS ALREADY TAKEN PLACE IN THE PERSON’S HEART.

 LORD'S SUPPER

 “ACTS OF THE LORD’S SUPPER”

MATTHEW 26:26-30

INTRODUCTION

OF ALL THE SCRIPTURAL ACTS OF A CHURCH, THE LORD’S SUPPER, COMMONLY CALLED “COMMUNION” TODAY, IS PROBABLY THE MOST MISUNDERSTOOD.  OUR CHURCH BELIEVES AND PRACTICES WHAT IS CALLED “CLOSED COMMUNION”, THAT IS, ONLY A SAVED MEMBER OF HIGHLAND PARK BAPTIST CHURCH MAY TAKE THE LORD’S SUPPER WITH US.  THAT TRUTH IS MISUNDERSTOOD EVEN BY MOST OF THE RELIGIOUS WORLD, AS WELL AS MOST OF THE UNSAVED PEOPLE OF THE WORLD. THIS IS NOT A NEW TEACHING TO OUR MEMBERS.  IT IS A CHURCH DOCTRINE THAT IS AS OLD AS THE CHURCH ITSELF.  IT WAS ESTABLISHED THAT WAY BY THE LORD JESUS CHRIST WHEN HE INSTITUTED IT WITH THE CHURCH HE CALLED OUT ON THE SHORES OF GALILEE.

I’M CONVINCED THAT A LARGE NUMBER OF PEOPLE JUST SIMPLY DON’T UNDERSTAND “WHY” CHURCHES OBSERVE THE LORD’S SUPPER AT ALL.  FOR A FEW MINUTES TONIGHT, I WANTED TO EXAMINE SOME REASONS WE OBSERVE THE LORD’S SUPPER.  FIRST AND FOREMOST, WE DO IT BECAUSE JESUS TOLD US TO. THAT WOULD BE A GOOD ENOUGH REASON, IF IT WERE THE ONLY ONE, BUT THERE ARE OTHER REASONS THAT SHOULD MAKE US WANT TO OBSERVE IT. I WANT TO COVER SEVEN ACTS OF THE LORD’S SUPPER THAT GIVE SCRIPTURAL REASONS FOR OUR CHURCH TO OBSERVE THE LORD’S SUPPER:

I. FIRST, THE LORD’S SUPPER IS AN ACT OF OBEDIENCE, AS SHOWN IN MATT. 28:20, “TEACHING THEM TO OBSERVE ALL THINGS WHATSOEVER I HAVE COMMANDED YOU: AND, LO, I AM WITH YOU ALWAY, EVEN UNTO THE END OF THE WORLD. AMEN.”  THE OBSERVANCE OF THE LORD’S SUPPER IS AN ACT OF OBEDIENCE BECAUSE IT WAS A COMMAND THE LORD GAVE TO HIS CHURCH IN HIS GREAT COMMISSION TO THEM.

II. SECOND, THE LORD’S SUPPER IS AN ACT OF REMEMBRANCE. II COR. 21:26, “FOR AS OFTEN AS YE EAT THIS BREAD, AND DRINK THIS CUP, YE DO SHOW THE LORD’S DEATH TILL HE COME.” OBSERVING THE LORD’S SUPPER IS AN ACT OF REMEMBERING, BECAUSE, IN IT, WE ARE TO REMEMBER THE LORD’S DEATH UNTIL HE RETURNS. EVERYTHING ABOUT THE SUPPER IS A REMINDER OF WHAT CHRIST DID FOR US.

III. THIRD, THE LORD’S SUPPER IS AN ACT OF TESTIMONY. I COR. 5:7, “PURGE OUT THEREFORE THE OLD LEAVEN, THAT YE MAY BE A NEW LUMP, AS YE ARE UNLEAVENED. FOR EVEN CHRIST OUR PASSOVER IS SACRIFICED FOR US:” OBSERVING THE LORD’S SUPPER IS AN ACT OF TESTIMONY OF OUR COMMITMENT TO LIVE A CHRIST-LIKE LIFE. IT IS A TESTIMONY OF THE PURITY OF CHRIST’S LIFE.

IV. FOURTH, THE LORD’S SUPPER IS AN ACT OF CONFESSION. MATT. 26:28, “FOR THIS IS MY BLOOD OF THE NEW TESTAMENT, WHICH IS SHED FOR MANY FOR THE REMISSION OF SINS.”  OBSERVING THE LORD’S SUPPER IS AN ACT OF CONFESSING THAT WE ARE SINNERS WHO HAVE BEEN SAVED BY THE SHED BLOOD OF CHRIST, AND NOT BY OUR OWN EFFORTS OR WORKS. IT IS A CONFESSION OF OUR UNWORITHINESS.

 V. FIFTH, THE LORD’S SUPPER IS AN ACT OF FELLOWSHIP.  I COR. 10:16-17, “THE CUP OF BLESSING WHICH WE BLESS, IS IT NOT THE COMMUNION OF THE BLOOD OF CHRIST? THE BREAD WHICH WE BREAK, IS IT NOT THE COMMUNION OF THE BODY OF CHRIST? FOR WE BEING MANY ARE ONE BREAD, AND ONE BODY: FOR WE ARE ALL PARTAKERS OF THAT ONE BREAD.” AS I JOHN 1:7 STATES, "BUT IF WE WALK IN THE LIGHT, AS HE IS IN THE LIGHT, WE HAVE FELLOWSHIP ONE WITH ANOTHER, AND THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST HIS SON CLEANSETH US FROM ALL SIN." OBSERVING THE LORD’S SUPPER IS AN ACT THAT BRINGS US INTO CLOSER FELLOWSHIP WITH OTHER CHILDREN OF GOD THROUGH THE COMMON BOND OF THE SHED BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST.

VI. SIXTH, THE LORD’S SUPPER IS AN ACT OF PRAISE. LUKE 22:19, “AND HE TOOK BREAD, AND GAVE THANKS, AND BRAKE IT, AND GAVE UNTO THEM, SAYING, THIS IS MY BODY WHICH IS GIVEN FOR YOU: THIS DO IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME.”  PARTAKING THE LORD’S SUPPER IN REMEMBRANCE OF CHRIST, HONORS AND GLORIFIES HIM FOR WHAT HE DID FOR EACH OF US.

VII. SEVENTH, THE LORD’S SUPPER IS AN ACT OF THANKSGIVING. I COR. 10:16, “FOR AS OFTEN AS YE EAT THIS BREAD, AND DRINK THIS CUP, YE DO SHOW THE LORD’S DEATH TILL HE COME”. THIS ACT OF PARTAKE OF THE SUPPER REMINDS US OF JUST HOW THANKFUL WE OUGHT TO BE FOR HIS TAKING OUR PLACE ON THE CROSS OF CALVARY, PAYING A DEBT HE DIDN’T OWE, TO PAY A DEBT THAT WE CANNOT PAY.

VIII SUMMARY:

A. AS WE COME TO THE OBSERVANCE OF THE SUPPER, LET US REALIZE THAT IT IS MORE THAN JUST ONE ACT. IT IS ONE ACT, THAT DECLARES MANY OTHER THINGS, AND THUS, MANY ACTS.

THERE ARE MANY REASONS TO OBSERVE THE LORD’S SUPPER, AS A CHURCH, BUT IF THE ONLY ONE WE KNEW ABOUT WAS THAT CHRIST TOLD US TO, THAT WOULD BE MORE THAN REASON ENOUGH.

 IX. OBSERVATION OF THE SUPPER:

WE NOW COME TO THE OBSERVANCE OF THE ORDINANCE OF THE LORD'S SUPPER.  LARRY AND BILL, PLEASE COME FORWARD TO PREPARE TO SERVE THE ELEMENTS OF THE SUPPER.

ALL MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH WHO INTEND TO OBSERVE THE SUPPER TONIGHT, PLEASE GATHER IN THE AISLE.  FORM A LINE ON EACH SIDE OF THE AISLE.

(AFTER THE ELEMENTS ARE PREPARED):

IT IS SAID THAT ON THE NIGHT BEFORE HE WAS BETRAYED, AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE PASSOVER, WHICH HE AND HIS DISCIPLES WERE CELEBRATING, HE TOOK BREAD AND HAVING BLESSED IT, BRAKE IT, AND GAVE TO HIS DISCIPLES AND SAID, "THIS IS MY BODY, WHICH IS GIVEN FOR YOU."

PRAYER:

WHEN THE BREAD IS IN THE HANDS OF ALL, THE PASTOR MAY SAY, "THIS IS THAT BREAD WHICH CAME DOWN FROM HEAVEN: NOT AS YOUR FATHERS DID EAT MANNA, AND ARE DEAD: HE THAT EATETH OF THIS BREAD SHALL LIVE FOR EVER." JOHN 6:58.

(AFTER WHICH HE EATS THE BREAD, WITH THE MEMBERS FOLLOWING HIS LEAD.)

THEN THE MINISTER MAY SAY:

ON THAT SAME NIGHT OUR LORD TOOK THE CUP AND HAVING BLESSED IT, GAVE TO HIS DISCIPLES AND SAID, "THIS IS MY BLOOD WHICH WAS SHED FOR YOU."

PRAYER:

WHEN ALL HAVE BEEN SERVED, THE PASTOR, TAKING THE CUP MAY SAY, "AND ALMOST ALL THINGS ARE BY THE LAW PURGED WITH BLOOD; AND WITHOUT SHEDDING OF BLOOD IS NO REMISSION." HEB. 9:22.

"BUT IF WE WALK IN THE LIGHT, AS HE IS IN THE LIGHT, WE HAVE FELLOWSHIP ONE WITH ANOTHER, AND THE BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST HIS SON CLEANSETH US FROM ALL SIN."  I JOHN 1:7.

(AFTER THIS, HE LEADS THE CONGREGATION IN DRINKING FROM THE CUP.

THEN THE PASTOR MAY SAY:

AFTER OUR LORD AND HIS DISCIPLES ATE THE BREAD AND DRANK THE FRUIT OF THE VINE, CELEBRATING THUS THE FIRST SUPPER OF OUR LORD, WE ARE TOLD IN MATT. 26:30, "AND WHEN THEY HAD SUNG AN HYMN, THEY WENT OUT INTO THE MOUNT OF OLIVES."

AS WE STAND, PLEASE BOW YOUR HEADS, AND THINK ON THESE THINGS FOR A TIME.  ARE YOU REALLY HOLDING CHRIST IN REMEMBRANCE?

AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE PRAYER, WE WILL SING AMAZING GRACE AND PASS AROUND TO PLACE THE CUPS IN THE CUP HOLDER.

PRAYER
